On Feb. 27 the City Council of Macedonia adopted a resolution authorizing the city engineer to prepare plans, bids and specifications and directing the mayor to advertise for bids for pavement repairs on North Freeway Drive.
Council members described the stretch as among the worst in the city and said a full-depth repair would cost approximately $1.4 million. The resolution authorizes an interim, emergency repair estimated at $200,000 intended to make the road drivable while the city pursues funding or development that could support a full rebuild. A council member described the road’s condition bluntly and urged rapid action: “This road is not even drivable…this has to happen ASAP,” the councilmember said.
City staff explained the $200,000 project is a temporary measure expected to extend the road’s condition for roughly three to five years, which aligns with the timeline provided by a business moving into the area that intends to expand and contribute to future funding. Officials cited potential funding sources including the existing road program and tax-increment financing (TIF) related to the new business expansion; however, the council said it would not divert the whole road program budget for a full-depth repair.
Officials also discussed design considerations for heavier truck traffic and noted the project will be put out to bid quickly; a bid-opening date mentioned during the meeting was March 14. The council approved the resolution by voice vote; the resolution carries and the city will proceed to advertise for bids.
