Resident urges safer bike routes, urges support for local BRT project

LAKE FOREST PARK, Wash. — A longtime resident told the City Council Thursday that he feels unsafe biking on 50th Avenue and urged elected officials to support the planned bus rapid transit line through the area.
Eric Hamilton, who identified himself as "a long time resident of Lake Forest Park," said he bikes to work on 50th Avenue and frequently feels in danger when using that route. "I feel it's a tremendously unsafe street," Hamilton said during public comment.
Hamilton also spoke in favor of the planned bus rapid transit project — referenced in the meeting as the "Bridal BRT" — saying it would improve transit for commuters who use the existing Route 522 service. "I think that project's really critical to the needs of our community and to the needs of the people," he said, and asked the council to consider regional transportation needs when evaluating local projects.
Hamilton said many of his co-workers rely on transit and that improvements tied to the BRT would benefit those who commute by bus. He also asked the council to consider safety improvements used in neighboring cities such as Kenmore and Bothell.
His remarks came during the meeting's public comment period. No formal council action was taken during public comment, though council members acknowledged his remarks and opened the floor to others for comment.
