Lawndale site council: unfilled aide positions put tutoring funds to use; safety coordinator added

At a Lawndale Elementary School Site Council meeting, staff outlined how the site is reallocating some funds because schools were unable to hire for an isolated instructional aide position and so used the money to fund tutors instead.
Staff said that when sites cannot fill a position they must re-describe the resource to spend the funds; otherwise the district risks returning money to the state. "If sites cannot hire, they change the description of the funds so the money can be used; 85 percent of the resources must be spent or the funds return to the state," the facilitator said.
Council members also reported adding a district safety coordinator and purchasing equipment to support student safety. Staff noted that they are ensuring staff certification in CPR and related requirements as part of the school safety plan that site councils review and approve.
The facilitator asked parents for examples of how the after-school program is serving students and said the council will continue to monitor spending in the second budget cycle to ensure resources are used as intended. No formal motions or votes were recorded in the transcript.
Staff encouraged sites that are having difficulty with acquisitions or forecasting expenses to revise fund descriptions now so they can obligate funds within the allowable uses and avoid reversion.
