District begins elementary science curriculum adoption; families to review two candidate programs

Lawndale Elementary District staff began a two-phase family input process on adopting new elementary science curriculum. Teachers and students are piloting two programs; families will review materials in a February follow-up meeting.
Cherice Jones, the district's Common Core TOSA, told families that Lawndale Elementary School District is beginning a two-part elementary science adoption process. "One thing that's important is our teachers are working with are are trying out 2 programs, and our students are getting to experience 2 programs," Jones said, and she said families' input will be combined with teacher and student feedback.
Jones said middle schools received new science curricula last year and the current focus is on the six elementary schools. Today's meeting was described as "part 1" of the family input process; Jones said she will return in February for "part 2" and bring the two candidate programs so families can compare them directly.
Facilitators asked families about their aspirations for children, how science connects to future careers and which classroom experiences parents value. Parents repeatedly favored hands-on learning, field trips, science camps and science fairs; one parent said, "I would like to see a science fair. They used to have those." Several parents and a former classroom teacher emphasized early exposure to science for English learners.
Jones explained that comments entered in the chat were being compiled into notes to share with the science team and that the district will pair family feedback with teacher and student experiences before making a recommendation.
No final curriculum decision was made at the meeting; staff set a February follow-up to present materials and collect final family input.
