Commissioners approve letter asking FDOT to reevaluate A1A pedestrian‑hybrid beacon design

The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners unanimously authorized a letter asking the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to reevaluate the design of a proposed pedestrian‑hybrid beacon on State Road A1A serving the South Beaches.

The request, introduced by Commissioner John Atkinson, asks FDOT to consider a design more compatible with the area of critical concern designation for the Brevard barrier island and to preserve scenic and natural resources while addressing pedestrian safety. Atkinson said FDOT completed a study in 2021 and the proposed device includes new sidewalk, ‘wildlife‑sensitive’ lighting, pedestrian signage and the hybrid beacon itself.

Public comment highlighted safety concerns and local opposition to the beacon’s aesthetic intrusion. David Vreeland, a South Beaches resident who lost two friends in separate fatal crossings at the location, urged the board to prioritize life‑saving measures over aesthetics: “Isn't it more important to save lives than to bother people's aesthetic sense?” he said.

Commissioner Altman and Commissioner Delaney said they supported exploring alternative designs and pointed to examples in other communities where crosswalk treatments are less visually intrusive. Commissioners encouraged the sponsor to meet directly with FDOT staff; a motion authorizing the letter passed 5–0.

What’s next: The board will transmit the letter and staff encouraged Commissioner Atkinson to meet with FDOT representatives for a technical review and possible design alternatives. FDOT will determine whether to revise the proposal.
