The College Place Youth Advisory Commission plans to pursue a sister-city relationship with Hungapeo in the Mexican state of Michoacán and with a city in Italy, a presenter told the Parks, Arbor and Recreation Board.
The presenter said the project aims to create youth exchanges or pen-pal programs and highlighted that about 10,000 people in the area trace origins to Hungapeo. The presenter noted a personal connection: both the mayor of Hungapeo and College Place’s mayor share the name Norma. Commissioners suggested the sister-city relationship could be recognized in parks graphics or signage and discussed a possible mural reflecting immigration history and agricultural roots.
No formal board action was taken; the Youth Advisory Commission project was reported for informational purposes and may be referenced in future grant applications and community-art initiatives.
