College Place group launches downtown association, wins $2,000 start-up grant

A newly forming downtown association in College Place has established a board, secured a $2,000 grant for operating expenses and plans to hire an executive director in summer, a meeting presenter said.
A staff member reporting to the Parks, Arbor and Recreation Board said the group has held official board meetings and is planning public programs including public art on the Enable Art Building and support for Andy’s Market, a potential flower-basket program for next year, and a larger community event in the fall. The presenter said the group’s logo was provided by a local company and incorporates tree imagery and seasonal colors intended to reflect College Place’s character.
The presenter said the downtown group will pursue Washington Main Street designation this fall. Commissioners asked whether the downtown organization overlaps with the Walla Walla Creative District; the presenter said there is geographic overlap but that the Creative District focuses primarily on arts promotion while the downtown group will emphasize business support, event production and downtown branding specific to College Place. The presenter said she has been nominated to the Creative District board and hopes the two efforts can cross-promote.
No formal action or funding beyond the $2,000 grant was approved at the meeting. The presenter said hiring an executive director is a goal for the summer and that additional fundraising and program planning will follow.
