Dr. Tina Owen Moore, chief officer for the Office of Board Governance, briefed the Milwaukee School Board on several governance items, including the superintendent search, implementation of an operational review and a district policy update.
"We were able to conclude this month," Owen Moore said of the superintendent search, and she said the board is "very excited to be welcoming Dr. Brenda Cassellius to the district." She added that contract negotiations were ongoing and hoped they would finish "in the next week or so." The board later approved a motion to retire to closed session to consider an employment agreement for the superintendent candidate.
Owen Moore said the office is working to implement recommendations from the MGT operational review and is coordinating board briefings with MGT and the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) for a self-evaluation tied to the report's recommendations.
She also said the district initiated a comprehensive policy review with NEOLA; the work began this month and will proceed in stages over the next year to 18 months to update and make policies more accessible and searchable for families and staff.
Owen Moore noted other ongoing governance work, including involvement in earlier discussion about school resource officers. The governance report was informational; the board did not take separate action on these governance items in open session.
