Interim superintendent reports higher applications after enrollment fairs; encourages families to apply by March 17

Eduardo Galvan, interim superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, reported to the board that recent enrollment fairs produced increased interest and applications for the 2025-26 school year.

"I'm happy to announce another successful enrollment fair with a combined attendance of 890 participants and currently 1,496 applications," Galvan said, noting applications were up by 135 from the previous year. He urged families with children entering kindergarten to "select their top choice schools and complete their application by March 17," while noting applications remain accepted after that date.

Galvan described the district's range of programs, including K3, K4 and K5 classes, neighborhood schools, specialty schools, Montessori, language immersion and bilingual programs, special education, art, music, physical education, advanced placement and International Baccalaureate offerings. He said the district has "a program for every student" and that families may choose schools across the district.

Galvan also highlighted district events and activities tied to student engagement, including Black History Month programs across schools, a Black History Museum pop-up at George Washington Carver Academy, musical performances, and a father-daughter dance that registered 1,040 participants. He closed by listing upcoming events and encouraging community participation.

The superintendent presented the enrollment and engagement information as an informational report; no board action was taken on the enrollment figures at the meeting.
