Board approves expulsions, administrative hires and a resolution opposing federal education cuts; moves to closed session

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors on Tuesday approved several personnel and disciplinary items, adopted a resolution opposing proposed federal education cuts and voted to retire to closed session to consider an employment agreement and legal matters.
On a motion by Director Seemson, seconded by Director Jackson, the board accepted the reports of the independent hearing officers concerning student expulsions. The roll call recorded nine ayes and the motion passed. Director Seemson moved the resolution opposing cuts to federal education funding; the board adopted Resolution 2425R-009 by unanimous roll call, nine ayes. Director O'Halloran moved, and Director Garcia seconded, approval of administrative appointments, promotions and limited-term employment contracts as listed in the revised attachment; that motion passed on a 9-0 roll call.
The board approved the balance of standing-committee reports on a motion by Director Garcia; the tally was recorded as eight ayes and one absent. Later in the meeting, the board voted to retire to closed session under Wisconsin Statutes Section 19.85(1)(c),(e) and (g) to consider an employment agreement with Dr. Brenda Cassellius and confer with legal counsel about pending or likely litigation. Director Gokul Gandhi moved to retire to closed session; Director O'Halloran seconded. The motion passed by a 9-0 roll call vote. The board noted it may return to open session only to take action on matters discussed in closed session or otherwise adjourn from closed session.
The votes recorded at the meeting were unanimous for the items taken on the open agenda, and the meeting record shows formal roll-call tallies for each action. The administration presented the recommended administrative appointments and two additional appointments added after the committee meeting; the board approved those appointments effective upon board action.
The board also referred Resolution 2425R-010, on establishment of an Oversight Review Advisory Committee, to the Committee on Parent and Community Engagement.
