The Green Bay Plan Commission on Feb. 24 approved rezoning 3385 Finger Road — the Finger Road softball complex — from rural residential and low-density residential to public institutional zoning.
A Community and Economic Development Department staff member described the property as nearly 26 acres designated as parkland in the city’s comprehensive plan. Staff said the rezoning is largely a cleanup measure to align city-owned park property with the public institutional district. Staff also explained that rezoning the park parcel removes the requirement for a 20–25-foot buffer that would otherwise apply where a proposed multifamily apartment project adjoins residentially zoned land; the park’s wetlands already function as a separation between the uses.
The staff presentation emphasized that the softball complex itself will remain in place and that no change to the park’s use is proposed. No members of the public spoke at the hearing. Alder Jim Hutchinson moved approval and Commissioner Darius Daniels seconded; the motion carried on a voice vote. Staff noted that if the property later leaves public institutional ownership (for example, it is sold to a nonpublic owner), it would need to be rezoned again and the public would be notified.
