San Luis approves intergovernmental agreement with Gadsden Elementary for school resource officers

The City of San Luis on Feb. 12 approved an intergovernmental agreement with Gadsden Elementary School District No. 32 to fund the San Luis Police Department's participation in a school resource officer (SRO) assignment at San Luis Middle School and Southwest Junior High School.
Patrol Lieutenant Alan Guevara explained the agreement will provide overtime funding for Arizona POST‑certified sworn personnel assigned to the schools. He said two officers were selected through an internal application process — Officer Pacheco and Officer Christian Gonzales — and that the agreement covers up to 180 days for eight hours per day as funding permits; any time beyond eight hours would be by request from the school principal or designee.
Guevara said the term will be effective upon the school district's governing-board approval and will run through the applicable fiscal period noted in the agreement. Councilmembers asked whether the department would hire additional officers to replace the two assigned to schools; Guevara said there were no immediate plans to hire replacements and that staffing requests could be considered as part of the upcoming budget process.
A councilmember moved to approve and adopt Order No. 2025-03 as presented. The motion passed by voice vote.
