Cedar Valley Elementary showcases student voice, wins state 'Schools on the Rise' recognition

Cedar Valley Elementary School staff and a student representative presented to the Kent School District Board about the school’s emphasis on student voice, academic progress and inclusion.
Principal Nicole O’Brien told the board the Covington school serves about 320 scholars and houses inclusive preschool and a LINC program. She said roughly one-fifth of students speak more than one language. The school was among 20 statewide recipients of a “Schools on the Rise” recognition for its efforts to center student voice, Principal O’Brien said.
Why it matters: The presentation illustrated how a focus on student voice is tied to academic engagement and behavior outcomes. Principal O’Brien pointed to growth in ELA and math diagnostic data, reductions in monthly discipline referrals (measured with the SWIS system) and attendance and inclusion strategies aimed at increasing belonging.
School highlights - Academic growth: O’Brien presented I-Ready and Smarter Balanced indicators showing gains in ELA and mathematics and noted first-grade math growth averages above the district average in recent assessment cycles.
