The Kern County Planning Commission on Monday approved a modification to a conditional use permit to set the dates for the 2025 National Water Ski Championship and voted to recommend a separate zone change and precise development plan for a storage project to the Board of Supervisors.
The commission approved modification No. 3 to Conditional Use Permit 17 map 161 to change the approved dates for the National Water Ski Championship to Aug. 5–11, 2025, on an approximately 77.76-acre parcel zoned A near the south side of Mullix Road about three-quarters of a mile west of the Mullix Road and North Wheeler Road intersection, according to staff. "The staff recommendation is to approve modification number 3 of conditional use permit 17 map 161," said Mr. Murphy, a planning department staff member.
The commission also voted on a zone change (Case No. 11, map 231) and Precise Development Plan No. 8, map 23116, for a 2.5-acre parcel at the northeast corner of 70 First Street West and Stetson Avenue in the Rosemond area. The requests seek a zone change from OS (open space) to M-1 PD (light industrial, planned development) and authorization to construct two metal warehouse storage buildings and to insulate six cargo containers for personal and vehicle storage. Staff recommended that the commission advise the Board of Supervisors to adopt a resolution and ordinance approving the zone change and to approve the precise development plan with recommended conditions and findings.
Both items were placed on the consent calendar and were approved on a 4-0 vote with one commissioner absent. The commission noted that Case No. 1 is a final action of the commission; Case No. 2 is a recommendation and will be set for Board of Supervisors consideration.
The commission read appeal information for Case No. 1. Appeals must be filed at the Kern County Planning and Natural Resources Department, 2700 M Street, Suite 100, Bakersfield, on forms available at the department and online, with a filing fee of $562. The filing must be made within 14 days, including the date of the hearing. If no appeal is received within that period, the commission's action on Case No. 1 becomes final.
There were no public presentations on these items during the public-comment portion of the meeting. The commission adjourned after routine business.
