The Pullman School District Board of Directors spent part of its Feb. 26 meeting reviewing a revised superintendent-evaluation policy and procedure that merges two previously drafted approaches.
Directors Aaron and a colleague combined prior drafts into a single procedure intended to provide a predictable timetable and clarify standards while allowing the board flexibility to adjust yearly priorities. “When we started looking at them, both were really saying, basically, the same thing,” Director Aaron said, describing the effort to reconcile policy language and process elements.
Board members said they support the general structure but asked for defined flexibility. Director Amanda said the structure was helpful, “but we also in the back of our minds need to realize that some things might need to change slightly over the course of the five years.” Director Greg questioned whether the procedure asks too much of a superintendent every year, noting concerns about evaluating multiple criteria annually.
The drafted procedure outlines a multi-year rotation of standards and a summative review at a later interval; it also requires a board-provided evaluation form and an aggregated letter to the superintendent that would be discussed at the July retreat. Board members agreed to continue refining the document and to bring the revised procedure back for action at the next meeting. Staff will consolidate suggested edits and circulate a draft ahead of the next public meeting.
