Belton approves $12,400 MoDOT traffic-safety grant, council completes final reading

Belton City Council approved the acceptance of a $12,400 grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation Division of Highway Safety and completed final reading of bill 2025-10, which authorizes a grant agreement for traffic enforcement funding.
Police Chief Lyons told the council the grant covers a portion of overtime for officers and dispatchers during targeted enforcement operations such as hazardous moving-violation enforcement, saturation patrols for DUI, and other selective enforcement details. Lyons said the 2024 enforcement operations generated 279 stops, including 108 citations for speeding, 34 warnings for hazardous moving violations, multiple seat-belt and suspension/insurance citations, and arrests arising from stops.
"This actually helps us allocate funding so we can have our patrol officers concentrate on calls for service, and then we have this grant that actually helps us with selective enforcement around town," Lyons said.
Councilors noted the grant reduces the need to use local taxpayer funds for overtime. The council approved a second reading and then a final reading; on the final roll-call vote recorded in the transcript, council members voted as follows: Lawson (Aye), Johnson (Aye), Davidson (Yes), Richardson (Aye), McCallum (Aye), Thompson (Yes), White (Aye), Bridal (Aye).
