Commission defers Old Hickory Boulevard rezoning after community opposition; council member seeks more meetings

The applicant’s representative said the team reduced the request after staff feedback and planned outreach.
Multiple speakers representing the Cane Ridge community club and nearby residents urged deferral, saying they had not been contacted, that the area’s roads are narrow with crash history and that the proposal represents a large increase in density without neighborhood engagement. The community club asked for a 90‑day deferral to allow meetings and negotiation; several speakers referenced limited school capacity and the presence of steep curves and a telephone pole near the proposed driveway.
Council member input: A council member was reported to have advised the commission that he does not support multifamily rezoning at this location. At the hearing a commissioner said Council member Lee has been active on the issue and requested staff to seek the council member’s input.
Commission action: The commission voted to defer the matter for two meetings and asked the applicant to host community meetings and coordinate with the council member and staff to address buffering, driveway safety and neighborhood concerns before the next hearing.
Next steps: Applicant to hold community meeting(s) and incorporate community and council feedback prior to the next scheduled commission hearing.
