Council abandons unbuilt segment of Aggies Avenue to allow adjacent home construction

The Tyler City Council voted to close and abandon an unconstructed portion of Aggies Avenue to allow the property owners who control both sides of the right of way to incorporate that strip into adjacent lots for home construction.
Planning staff told the council the right of way was never constructed and that surrounding land is undeveloped. The planning commission recommended approval of the thoroughfare closure with a condition that the abandoned area be replanted into the adjacent properties within six months.
Councilmember McKellar moved approval and Councilmember Wynne seconded; the motion carried on a voice vote with no recorded opposition. Council members asked whether the city had ever planned improvements there; planning staff replied there were no known plans and no returned notices in favor or opposition to the closure.
The applicant owns the properties on both sides of the right of way, staff said, and intends to build homes on the combined lots. The closure does not immediately change the zoning of the parcels; standard permitting and platting will apply as the project advances.
