Mead County emergency management recounts structure fire, gas-line rupture and seeks Homeland Security grants

Sean Henderson, Mead County Emergency Management and Veterans Services, reported two recent incidents and ongoing grant work at the meeting.
Henderson said dispatch contacted emergency management for a Jan. 20 structure fire (MLK Day). Local volunteer fire departments responded and extinguished a garage fire; the family of four and pets were not injured and the residents were not displaced.
He also described a gas-line rupture caused when a contractor placed excavation in the wrong location relative to marked utilities. The rupture occurred near a cul-de-sac on a work site where wind direction kept the hazard away from adjacent homes; the gas company was able to cap the line and the incident did not require evacuations. Henderson said the county and utilities responded, and that the event mistakenly occurred where the contractor had been directed to dig.
On planning and preparedness work, Henderson said he is assisting volunteer fire departments with 2025 Homeland Security grant applications; the grant submission deadline is this Friday (Valentine’s Day). He also said the Black Hills Council is leading a regional pre-disaster mitigation plan update for 2026–2031, and county representatives will participate. Henderson said Kaylee Snyder from the Black Hills Council will brief the commission at an upcoming meeting about the planning process.
