Meade County commissioners unanimously oppose HCR 6010, back SCR 605 on forest management

Commissioners approved a motion to send a county letter opposing House Concurrent Resolution 6010, which the commission described as a first step toward creating a state commission to oversee development in the Black Hills. The motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
“...that’s just the first step in, first, the step to get in the State Commission,” a commissioner said during the discussion, expressing concern that local planning authority could be displaced. The commission’s draft letter says the proposed state oversight would affect local decisionmaking and the county intends to oppose the measure and any follow‑on study.
Separately, the commission unanimously approved a letter supporting Senate Concurrent Resolution 605, which asks the U.S. Forest Service to increase active forest management. Commissioner Orrick introduced the SCR 605 letter. Commissioners said the resolution aligns with local concerns about wildfire risk and forest conditions.
Both actions were recorded as unanimous. Commissioners said they had received numerous calls from residents on both items and that the HCR 6010 letter was drafted with input from county staff and callers before the meeting.
