Board hears facilities needs, toilet repairs tied to vaping, roofing and HVAC projects; CIP request approved

The facilities director said the division has responded to an increase in clogged or damaged toilets at the high school caused by vaping paraphernalia; staff reported 31 toilets cleared and 12 that had to be replaced in recent months, with an estimated cost of roughly $4,500 to date for labor and materials. Roof repair expenses also rose after winter freeze‑thaw events, and several older electrical switchgear and HVAC components are nearing replacement. The director walked through needs at specific schools including high school rooftop HVAC replacement (engineering and cable work under way), Pocahontas Elementary casework and bathroom tile replacement, updates to public address and bell systems, and classroom furniture replacement at multiple elementary schools.
During the presentation the board voted to advance the division’s FY26 CIP request. Board member Hart moved approval of the division’s FY26 CIP request totaling $11,464,803; the motion was seconded and passed by roll call with all five members recorded as “Aye.” The board instructed staff to continue work with the county on scheduling and phasing for large projects such as the high‑school HVAC replacement and Pocahontas Elementary projects.
