Greensville County reports rising high-school SOL/EOC scores; district outlines corrective-action and strategic-plan next steps

Greensville County Public Schools reported improved end-of-course (EOC) results for fall 2024 at Greensville County High School and described ongoing corrective-action work with the Virginia Department of Education and an upcoming strategic-plan implementation schedule.

At the Jan. 28 meeting, Dr. Posey James presented fall 2024 EOC results: "EOC reading, we are currently at 73.8 percent," she said, reporting 59 of 80 students passed the reading EOC. She said Algebra I pass rates were 85.7 percent (66 of 77 students) and Algebra II pass rates were 97 percent (32 of 33 students). Biology pass rates were reported at 72 percent (72 of 100 students), representing improvement over fall 2023 figures.

Superintendent Dr. Edwards reviewed the district's corrective action plan required by a memorandum of understanding with the Virginia Department of Education. He said district leadership has participated in Region 8 superintendent meetings, fiscal-management training, school-quality liaison conferences, and multiple data discussions aimed at improving accreditation outcomes and reducing chronic absenteeism. The superintendent said some activities were affected by inclement weather; staff worked roughly 10 instructional days in the month cited.

The board learned the district will partner with the Berkeley Group to create key performance indicators (KPIs) for the district's 2024–2029 strategic plan. Dr. Edwards said the Berkeley Group will help develop metrics and that initial meetings will begin in February with a series through May, and the resulting implementation plan will be presented to the board around May.

Board chair Ruston Jesse and others praised staff and teachers at Greensville County High School for the reported gains. The board did not adopt any new academic policy at the meeting; the item was presented as an information update and corrective-action status report.
