Council hears from transit applicant; appoints Bethany Clark as Green Mountain Transit alternate

The Essex Junction City Council on Feb. 26 interviewed an applicant for an alternate seat on the Green Mountain Transit (GMT) board and later filled the position by appointing Bethany Clark.
Stephanie Clark, a lifelong Essex Junction resident, joined the Feb. 26 meeting online to summarize her interest. "I'm a non-driver, so it's a very important part of living in Essex Junction for me," she said, describing personal experience using local transit and a desire to represent city riders. Clark said she is flexible for morning and many midday meetings and suggested partnerships and use of technology as possible approaches to help GMT manage service reductions without cutting access.
Councilors asked about scheduling challenges, attendance expectations for GMT committees and ideas for stabilizing service. Clark said she supports exploring alternatives to cutting service and suggested raising fares as a last resort after other options are considered.
In executive session and follow-up open session the council appointed Bethany Clark as an alternate to the Green Mountain Transit Board of Commissioners, term expiring June 30, 2027. The motion to appoint passed unanimously.
Ending: The city will notify GMT and the appointee to finalize paperwork for the alternate seat.
