Superintendent reviews SOL pass-rate trends; teachers and coach honored

Superintendent Dr. Bolling presented a data review of Clark County Public Schools’ state Standards of Learning (SOL) pass-rate rankings, and the board recognized two teachers for high pass rates and longtime Clark County High School wrestling coach John VanSise for a national honor.
Dr. Bolling said he reviewed state data from Build-A-Table dating to 2006 and noted that Clark County Public Schools ranked 57th out of 131 divisions overall in 2024, placing the division in the upper half of Virginia school divisions. He summarized long-term variation, saying the division’s rankings have ranged historically from roughly 30th to 70th in the state and that targeted review helps identify areas for improvement.
The superintendent broke down performance by subject and subgroups. He said the division’s strengths in 2024 included writing (28th of 31) and history (27th of 31) while mathematics (75th of 31) and science (59th of 31) were relatively lower-ranked for the overall population. He noted grade-level results and said the division would provide brief data updates at future meetings, including literacy-plan information tied to the Virginia Literacy Act.
At the meeting the board recognized Tessa Fosha, whose world geography students produced strong pass rates that placed Clark County Public Schools fourth among 31 divisions, and Rachel Crawford, whose world history II results topped the state. Both teachers received certificates and spoke briefly, thanking colleagues and students.
Earlier in the meeting the board honored former Clark County High School wrestling coach John VanSise, who retired after 24 seasons and was named a 2025 National Wrestling Hall of Fame honoree. VanSise thanked the board and reflected on his career; board members praised his contributions to students and the community.
Dr. Bolling requested future brief data updates on the Virginia Literacy Act and literacy plans and asked the board if they had questions; none were raised.
