The Patrick County School Board opened and then closed its advertised public hearing on the 2025–26 school budget Feb. 13 after no members of the public asked to speak.
“Is there anyone here wishing to speak before the school board regarding the 2025–26 school budget? Seeing none, I will now close the 2025–26 Patrick County Public Schools budget public hearing,” the chair said during the meeting.
During new business Superintendent Wood gave an update on the current fiscal-year (FY25) budget, reporting that the division had implemented a 3% raise effective July 1 with state matching funds, increased contributions toward employee insurance to prevent premium increases for staff, purchased two new buses, and received more than $600,000 in grants for security and homeless supplies. Wood also noted a rise in energy costs, saying January energy spending rose by about $31,000 and that the division is monitoring year-over-year increases.
The board approved routine motions by voice vote earlier in the meeting: adoption of the meeting agenda and approval of the consent agenda. No roll-call tallies were recorded in the minutes for those votes in the transcript excerpted at the meeting.
Later, the board voted to convene a closed session for a personnel discussion. The motion to go into closed session cited the Virginia Code: “pursuant to section 2.2-3711(A)(1) to discuss personnel and the monthly personnel report.” A motion to enter closed session was moved by Mister Martin, seconded, called for ayes, and the chair declared the board in closed session.
Board members discussed other items during the meeting, including maintenance quotes (a discussion about rubber mulch for playgrounds) and upcoming professional events for board members. No final budget adoption for 2025–26 occurred at this meeting; Wood said the division is awaiting revisions to the biennium capital funding and potential state amendments that could add funds to the division.
