Middle Country honors student musicians, athletes, advocates and PTA initiatives

The district recognized students for All-County and All-State music honors, All-County/NISMA selections, athletes of the month across schools, student lobbying in Albany and PTA's PARP reading activities; several staff and parents were acknowledged for chaperoning and support.
Middle Country Central School District honored dozens of students and staff for music, athletics and advocacy achievements during the regular Board of Education meeting.
Dr. Siegel and Ms. Pacifico led recognition of students who participated in the district's recent Albany lobbying trip; Dr. Siegel said the students were "so well prepared" and that an elected official, Assemblywoman Rebecca Kasay, told the district she was impressed by their advocacy for others. Certificates of recognition were distributed on behalf of Middle Country and Assemblyman Doug Smith's office.
The board recognized multiple music honors: elementary and high-school students who earned All-County selections, students invited to the New York State Band Directors Association Symposium in Syracuse (March 7), and All-State selections and alternates. Several students' names were read into the record, including Thomas Lasher (All-State Symphonic Band, euphonium), Yohani Chen (All-County symphonic band/piccolo and selected for a state symposium), Sean Edbert (All-State Symphonic Band, French horn) and others. The board presented certificates and noted the district funds All-State hoodies for students through a Middle Country Education Foundation grant.
Jessica Zheng, a student in a college computer graphics class offered through Suffolk County Community College, received recognition for designing the district's course offering book cover; she received $25 and a certificate of recognition.
Athletes of the month were announced for Newfield, Center Reach and Centered High School programs. Newfield's athletes included Sophie Chen (fencing) and Matt Kresser (fencing); Josh Hayes (Newfield basketball) and others were recognized for performances that contributed to playoff success. Center Reach honorees included Dan Coller (track) and Lily Lacey (kick line). Coaches and staff introduced the athletes and described their accomplishments.
PTA vice president Kim Nelson (Stagecoach Elementary School) described PARP (Pick A Reading Partner), a PTA New York State-sponsored family reading initiative running this week with a Wizard of Oz theme, family movie night and other literacy events. Board members thanked PTAs and chaperones who helped with student events.
The recognitions were presented during the beginning portion of the meeting; no formal board action was associated with the awards.
