Members of the NNDCC junior ROTC battalion presented photos and a short report to the school board on Jan. 21 about their recent trip to Hawaii, where cadets marched in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade and visited the USS Arizona Memorial and Polynesian Cultural Center.
The groups adult leader and battalion commander outlined the itinerary, highlighted educational elements (a parade appearance, a visit to the USS Missouri and USS Arizona Memorial, and cultural experiences at the Polynesian Cultural Center) and shared that the trip created lasting memories for cadets. Presenters described attending the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade, meeting an elderly survivor during opening ceremonies, touring the Dole Plantation and seeing a cultural show called "Breath of Life."
A presenter thanked the board and central office for supporting the trip; she said the board paid airfare and that Title I and Title V funds were approved to cover $18,988 for room accommodations. The students and staff also thanked community fundraisers and individual donors who contributed to the trip.
Board members and members of the audience acknowledged the cadets and invited parents in the audience to stand for recognition.
