Following a district review process involving teachers and administrators, the board approved Studies Weekly for K–5 and Kiddom for sixth grade as the recommended science materials for the district's eight-year adoption cycle.
Murfreesboro City Schools on Feb. 25 approved the district textbook committee’s recommendation to adopt new science instructional materials for grades K–6.
District staff described a multiweek process in which teachers from every school reviewed vendor materials approved by the Tennessee Textbook Commission. The committee solicited feedback from 87 teachers during an initial review week, narrowed vendors to two options, then rotated samples to all schools so every teacher could review them before the committee reconvened and voted.
As presented at the meeting, the committee recommended Studies Weekly for kindergarten through fifth grade, adopted by a two-thirds majority, and Kiddom for sixth grade, adopted by a three-fourths majority. The materials will serve as the district’s curriculum for the eight-year science textbook adoption cycle. Staff said teacher training is expected in late spring to prepare for classroom use in the coming school year.
Board policy 4.4 was cited during the presentation as the policy that assigns textbook-selection responsibilities to the local committee, subject to board approval. The motion to adopt the recommended materials was moved and seconded and carried on a voice vote.
