The York City Health Department requested committee approval to add a bill amending the 2025 budget for a $145,198 Healthy Moms and Babies grant and a resolution authorizing an agreement with the County of York for $500,000 for the period July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. Both items were placed on the March 4 legislative agenda.
Monica Krueger of the Health Department described the awards as county-funded grants through Children and Youth Services that directly fund the department’s maternal-child health program (Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies). She said the department previously budgeted $354,802 but that updated county funding increased the amount and that the additional money is a designated, earmarked increase.
Krueger said the extra funding is specifically intended to allow hiring of two positions: a community health specialist (the department is requesting a Haitian Creole-speaking candidate) and a part-time nurse. She told council the department has been understaffed and that the additional funds will expand capacity to serve pregnant and parenting women and infants.
Council members praised the program and suggested the department’s website and contact details be promoted. Krueger confirmed eligibility is city residents who are pregnant or postpartum with children under age 2 and provided the department phone number for residents in the meeting: 717-849-2299. After discussion motions to place both the budget amendment and the county agreement on the March 4 agenda were moved, seconded and carried by voice vote.
