Chesterfield County School Board appoints John T. Murray as superintendent

Board members said the resolution followed a nationwide search and local input; the board noted Murray had been serving as interim superintendent since September and previously held multiple leadership roles in the division. Dr. Murray took the oath of office at the special meeting administered by Amanda Pohl, Chesterfield circuit court clerk, and addressed the board and attendees.
"I am honored and humbled to accept the position of superintendent officially of Chesterfield County Public Schools," Dr. John T. Murray said after the vote. He said his primary goal is "to ensure that every decision we make is strategic and centered around our students' needs" and emphasized his commitment to open communication and data-informed decisions.
Board members who spoke in support cited Murray's long service in the division and experience in instructional and administrative roles. Lisa Hudgens, a school board member, said Murray "has a proven track record in our own very large and complex school division" and that she looked forward to working with him. Dominique Chatters highlighted his focus on equity and supportive environments; Steven Pronto and Anne Coker also expressed confidence in his leadership.
The resolution appointing Dr. Murray was read aloud during the meeting and states the appointment term as commencing Jan. 17, 2025 and ending June 30, 2028. The motion to adopt the resolution passed on a roll-call vote with the five seated board members recorded as voting yes. The board then introduced Dr. Murray and requested he speak to those present.
The special meeting also included a brief announcement that the school board will hold a budget work session Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at 4 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room. With no further business, the board adjourned the Jan. 16 meeting.
The action formally appoints Dr. John T. Murray as division superintendent; the chair and the clerk are authorized to sign an employment agreement consistent with the resolution adopted by the board.
