CECLA early‑childhood center reports enrollment growth, improved mid‑year assessments

Dr. Harris, principal of CECLA, gave the board an update on the early‑childhood center during the superintendent’s report on Feb. 27, saying the program is fully staffed, serves 362 students and includes 29 classrooms plus four VPI classrooms and 12 early childhood special education (ECSE) rooms.
Harris said the center uses the Creative Curriculum, Heggerty and other research‑based tools and highlighted mid‑year assessment gains: on the VALS letter‑recognition measure mid‑year strong‑category scores rose to 39.58% (114 students) from a fall mid‑year figure of 14.93% (43 students). She also reported gains on the VKRP self‑regulation measure and on other whole‑child assessments used at the center.
Harris described partnerships with the Chesterfield Education Foundation and the Chesterfield Technical Center, noting the center hosts an early‑childhood CTE practicum where secondary students work toward a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. She also listed family engagement events, before‑ and after‑school YMCA care funded by a CEF grant, and upcoming outreach including Read Across CECLA Day and a kindergarten transition night.
Board members thanked Harris for the update and recognized grant awards and regional recognition for the center’s CTE program.
