Committee confirms appointments to Human Rights, LGBTQ and Disability commissions
Summary
The Housing and Human Services Committee unanimously recommended confirmation of 12 appointments to three city advisory commissions; recommendations will be forwarded to the March 4 full City Council meeting.
The Seattle City Council Housing and Human Services Committee on Feb. 26 recommended confirmation of appointments to the Seattle Human Rights Commission, the Seattle LGBTQ Commission and the Seattle Disability Commission.
Chair Kathy Moore moved the three recommendation votes during the committee’s meeting; each motion was seconded and passed unanimously by the four members present. The committee’s recommendations will be forwarded to the full City Council for final action at the March 4 meeting.
The Human Rights Commission nominees were Trevor Dunston, Gwen McAuliffe, Kyle Tibbs and Diane Ortega Chance for terms ending Jan. 22, 2026. Moore described the commission as an advisory body to the mayor, City Council and the Office for Civil Rights and summarized nominees’ backgrounds in sociology, public service, nonprofit and public health advocacy.
The committee next recommended confirmation of five nominees to the LGBTQ Commission. The nominees listed were Jessa Gabrielle Davis, Maha Roy and Teresa Smith for terms expiring April 30, 2025, and Chris Curia and Landon Laboski for terms expiring Oct. 31, 2026. The committee noted that two of the short-term appointments will apply for reappointment when those brief terms expire in April.
Finally the committee recommended confirmation of Bianca Gallegos, Jessica Jensen and Caitlin Skilton to the Seattle Disability Commission for terms ending Oct. 31, 2026. Moore summarized each nominee’s relevant experience, including organizing, educational and disability advocacy backgrounds.
Each of the three motions was approved on a roll call vote of Council President Nelson (aye), Council Member Rink (yes), Council Member Saka (aye) and Chair Moore (aye). The committee’s recommendations will be transmitted to the March 4 City Council meeting for final confirmation votes.
The meeting minutes show no substantive debate recorded on these confirmations; Moore thanked the nominees for their willingness to serve.
