Roanoke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Nicely told the school board on Feb. 25 that the district’s Opportunity Ready Graduate program has been taken to scale and that students at all five high schools can earn a diploma seal this year.
Dr. Nicely described the K–12 initiative as starting in elementary grades with student-led conferences and continuing through portfolio collection and senior-level portfolio defense at the high-school level. He said the district received the first diploma seals that day and asked directors of instruction to assist with a presentation to the board.
Dr. Nicely also announced two instructional-calendar changes intended to recoup lost instructional time after winter weather: the scheduled early-dismissal days on Wednesday, Feb. 26, and Thursday, April 17, will now be full days of instruction. He said the district will notify staff and families of the change.
The superintendent thanked transportation and maintenance staff for weather-related work and singled out Northside High School principal Jill Green for recognition after she was featured in Roanoke Magazine. Dr. Nicely read a proclamation recognizing school board appreciation events and acknowledged board-clerk appreciation for the clerk’s work.
A visiting superintendent, Kim Halterbone of Allegheny Highlands Schools, presented a regional-professional recognition to Dr. Nicely, noting his selection as regional superintendent of the year by the regional superintendents’ group.
The board did not take formal action on the Opportunity Ready program at the meeting; Dr. Nicely framed the announcement as an update on implementation and praised staff across the district involved in the initiative.
