School division to accept two unbudgeted grants including computer-science kit funding

Susan Peterson told the board Feb. 10 that the division has received two unbudgeted grants and asked that the board place requests to accept and appropriate those funds on the consent agenda.
Peterson said one award is a VDOE career switcher program grant for new teachers entering the profession, and the other is an advancing-computer-science grant titled "Brick by Brick: Bringing Computer Science to the Elementary Education" that funds Lego robotics in all elementary schools. "We are getting Lego robots in all of the elementary schools," Peterson told the board and credited Kim Bradshaw and her team for the application.
The nut graf: unbudgeted grants are funds granted after the original budget was adopted and require appropriation into the grant fund to be spendable; the board was asked to approve placing the acceptance of these grants on the consent agenda so staff can appropriate and expend the awards.
Peterson said some grant monies have already been received and staff will move appropriations from special projects in the grant fund to enable spending. No dollar amounts were provided in the work-session presentation; Peterson said details would be included in the consent agenda backup materials.
