Nathan Rogers, the Student Advisory Council representative, told the board the council’s Feb. 5 meeting centered on technology and school safety and included presentations by Jeff Terry (director of technology), Ryan McCormick (associate director of technology), James Edwards (ITRT) and Dr. Rhonda Stegall.
Rogers said the council provided interactive feedback on the district’s transition to Canvas and that the feedback “will be used to inform future IT and professional development initiatives.” He reported that McCormick introduced early-stage efforts to incorporate AI tools into learning and that students asked about how AI would be integrated and what training teachers and students will receive.
Terry briefed students on data security and privacy issues and on monitoring tools the district uses, including Lightspeed, Gaggle and Verkada; anonymous reporting via SpeakUp was also discussed. On school safety, students recommended clearer marking of “hard corners” for lockdowns and expressed interest in unannounced drills. Dr. Rhonda Stegall clarified, Rogers said, that all lockdown drills must comply with state notification laws.
Rogers also announced the Student Advisory Council’s next meeting will be March 5, with a focus on instruction and opportunity-ready skills, and that the district’s student leadership conference is scheduled for April 25.
