Commission approves amended National Register nomination for Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort

The City of Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission on a unanimous voice vote approved the final draft of proposed amendments and updates to the National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, located at 500 East Washington Avenue.
The commission’s action forwards a revised nomination — expanded historical context, an archaeological field survey, updated property mapping and detailed photo documentation — to the Nevada Board of Museums and History for state-level review and then to the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., for final consideration.
The update effort follows the commission’s October 25, 2023 decision to fund consultant work. At that meeting the commission approved $28,920 to hire CALS environmental consultants to amend and update the Fort’s designation. The current draft incorporates property changes and physical alterations that have occurred since the prior nomination more than 50 years ago, and it reflects changes the commission requested at an August 28, 2024 meeting and additional edits made after a December presentation to the commission.
Dr. Diane Seabrent, the commission’s staff representative and historic preservation officer, told commissioners the consultant has completed the contracted work required under the current agreement. She said the additional edits requested by the chair would require extra funding and that the commission cannot authorize that spending at the same meeting because it was not agendized; she will return with a dollar amount at a future meeting for the commission to consider.
Commissioner Perdue moved to accept the final draft with the recommended changes; the motion carried unanimously. The chair cast a vote in favor and commissioners on the record affirmed the motion in the roll call/vote sequence.
Commissioners and staff praised the nomination document’s depth and photo documentation and said they expect it to be an improved resource for state and federal review.
The nomination will now proceed to the Nevada Board of Museums and History for its meeting schedule and then to the National Park Service for final determination on listing to the National Register of Historic Places.
Documentation submitted with the staff packet includes the draft nomination, prior review notes, and an email from the chair listing proposed final edits. Any additional consultant work to make the chair’s requested edits will require a separate agendized funding request and vote at a future meeting.
