School division outlines progress on comprehensive plan goal: academic growth and engagement

Doctor Martin presented the first of several comprehensive-plan updates focused on Goal 1: academic growth and engagement, describing current strategies and changes already in place.
Martin said the division has embedded tiered systems of support into new-teacher orientation and administrator training and holds quarterly data meetings for principals and district leaders to make timely instructional adjustments. For mathematics the division has implemented the Virginia Department of Education's new math standards and emphasized small-group instruction and reteaching. For English, Martin said the division has adopted a high-quality instructional material (HMH) and moved away from balanced literacy and leveled-literacy interventions because they are not aligned with the Virginia Literacy Act; the division is implementing structured literacy and interventions such as UFLY and Lexia.
Martin also described scheduling changes at the high school — a 4x4 block schedule and hybrid models — that have expanded student options, allowed course retakes and increased dual-enrollment and AP flexibility. The division has expanded work-based learning and internship opportunities and added new CTE course offerings driven by student interest surveys. Martin said additional comprehensive-plan objectives will be reported in coming months.
