Commission approves monument sign for Burns and Scallow at Tech Center Drive

The Gahanna Planning Commission on Feb. 26 approved a variance to allow a monument sign for Burns and Scallow at 1070 Tech Center Drive, replacing an east wall sign that had been approved in a previous variance.

Planning staff said the monument sign is 78 inches tall, about 32.5 square feet, and meets zoning code requirements. The earlier November approval allowed two wall signs; the commission had conditioned that a new variance would be required if a monument sign were proposed. The applicant filed the new application as that condition required.

Steven Butzko of Branham Sign Company, speaking for the applicant, said Burns and Scallow preferred a monument sign to the previously approved east wall sign and that the change was determined to be more appropriate as the building became complete. Staff recommended approval, noting that a monument sign plus one wall sign more closely aligns with the intent of the code than two wall signs.

Commissioner Suriano moved to approve VDash0007-2025; Commissioner Greenberg seconded. The roll call vote recorded unanimous yes votes among the commissioners recorded on the motion and the motion passed.

The approved monument sign will be set roughly 31 feet from the right of way and must conform to the dimensions and placement shown in the approved plans. No members of the public spoke in opposition at the hearing.

This action amends the earlier variance approval (VDash0029-2024) by substituting a monument sign for the east wall sign that had been part of that package.
