Wetherby School presentation: new "Purposeful People" character program and PBIS work cited for falling referrals

Wetherby School principal Mrs. Cyr told the RSU 22 board that the school has expanded to include grade 2 and introduced a character curriculum called Purposeful People as part of its PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) work.
The program centers on three monthly themes — be kind (respect, empathy, cooperation), be strong (responsibility, perseverance, courage) and be well (gratitude, honesty, creativity). The principal said staff and students are using common language across grades 2–5; adults present monthly awards and the school holds all-school assemblies to celebrate the habits.
Mrs. Cyr told the board the school’s enrollment rose from 267 last year to 384 this year. She said staff have given more than 180 awards so far this year and reported behavior referrals have decreased compared with the prior year, a change she attributed to the focused climate work and consistent adult modeling of expectations. The school counselor teaches the habits to every student and staff have incorporated the program into professional recognition as well as student recognition.
Board members asked questions and thanked the principal for the report. No formal board action was required for the presentation.
