Key Club advisor Terry Jenkins Suggs requested permission to take three students to the New England District Educational Conference in Portland. The advisor said about one-third of the cost would be covered by the Key Club account, one-third anticipated from a donation by the Hamlet Kiwanis Club, and the final third (about $112) would be the responsibility of each student; transportation would be in a district van. The board noted students with financial hardship would be assisted from club funds as needed.
Hampden Academy teacher Ben Johnson requested approval to take a JCL (Latin Club) academic team to a Harvard competition. He estimated taking about two teams (eight competitors) plus alternates — roughly 10 students — traveling by 15-passenger van and staying overnight. Johnson said the cost to the district would be zero: the JCL account would pay the van and students would be charged for hotel and food, with discretionary support available from the JCL account for students unable to pay.
A board member moved to approve the three trips individually or as a slate; the board voted to approve them together. The transcript records the motion and a subsequent affirmative vote.
