Comal ISD board approves 'Mayfair Elementary' for Elementary No. 23 after committee recommendation

District staff said the recommendation came from a naming committee, formed as a subset of the attendance boundary committee, that reviewed five community nominations and met three times. Daniel Mendez, a district staff member who assisted the committee process, told trustees the committee had considered nominations that included past and present U.S. presidents, Emma Voechler (daughter of a district founder), Landa (a local landmark), and Mayfair (the development where the campus will be located). The committee’s consensus recommendation was Mayfair Elementary.
Board policy CW Local governs facility naming and sets criteria that include honoring an educator with outstanding service, naming for a local geography or landmark, or naming after historically significant former schools. Several trustees said they support Mayfair as a geographic name, but some expressed concerns about the district relying on a developer or subdivision name and asked the board to consider whether the naming policy should be revisited.
Trustee Jason York said he was wary of multiple campuses using the same geographic name in one area and asked the committee and board to guard against repetitive names as the district builds additional campuses. Trustee Tim Hennessy urged the board to review the policy that currently limits naming after living people.
The motion to approve the name was made by Trustee Tim Hennessy and seconded by Trustee Amanda Jones. The board also discussed next steps, including selection of a mascot and color palette; staff advised that finalizing mascot and color choices early helps with signage and other long‑lead items, and said a decision by late winter is preferable to meet production timelines for the fall opening.
The board asked staff to continue the naming process for the planned Middle School No. 9 and to solicit additional nominations for future campus namings. The board approved the Mayfair Elementary name at the meeting; the committee will proceed to recommend a mascot and color scheme for the new campus.
