Public commenters urge Meta to aid laid-off dining staff; raise safety and crisis-response concerns

Seven pre-registered speakers addressed the council during oral communications, with topics ranging from layoffs of Meta-contracted dining staff to local safety and praise for the city's Community Assistance Team (CAT).

Meta-contracted dining workers: Multiple speakers who identified themselves as contracted dining staff at Meta's local campuses asked the council to use its platform to press Meta to extend benefits or otherwise mitigate the harm after mass layoffs. "I and 95 other workers at these Meta campuses were laid off last Friday at 7 p.m., and found out that we would lose our healthcare the following week," said Mads Eilertson, one of the speakers. Other speakers said they received little warning, face COBRA costs they cannot afford and noted that an executive bonus program was announced the same day as the layoffs.

Coal Creek Parkway safety: Resident Steve Fantel spoke in favor of the city's safety project for Coal Creek Parkway but said the proposed work (new 35 mph signs, upgraded curve warnings and four radar feedback signs) will not be enough without enforcement and specific safety work at the Coal Creek Natural Area driveway. "The minimum bid to perform this work, dollars 647,000 is to be funded by a $1,240,000 grant from WSDOT, which was awarded to the city of Bellevue in 2022," Fantel told council. He recommended the city consider speed safety cameras (a 2024 state statutory change allows municipalities to install them in some locations) and asked staff to allocate additional grant funds to build a concrete triangular island to deter hazardous left turns into the natural-area parking lot.

Community Assistance Team praise: Former Bellevue resident Laurie McKay described how a city social worker and officer helped her family navigate a crisis when a relative with dementia was behaving aggressively. McKay credited the city's CAT staff with advising her family on how to describe the incident to 911 and with helping them avoid a criminal arrest; she said her father died surrounded by family and not in jail.

Other speakers: Several Meta-contracted workers (Hugo Ramos, Noeli Campos and others) reinforced the suddenness of layoffs and the precarious position of low-wage service workers who lose employer-sponsored health coverage. A commenter urged the council to enforce rules of decorum against a public commenter who "has PDC fines over $35,000," and one speaker whose remarks included profanity was cut off by the presiding officer after repeated interruptions.

No council action was taken during the oral communications period; staff were asked to note comments and, where relevant, follow up through typical departmental channels.
