Karen (district finance staff) told the board the general fund ended January slightly in the black, at just over $1 million on the district statement, and she said staff effort and reduced discretionary spending helped avoid a short‑term interfund loan.
Board members said, if current spending controls continue, the district may avoid borrowing in March as well, but they noted a fiscal challenge will recur in June when state apportionment timing can create a seasonal cash dip; the superintendent and finance staff said they will devise a June cash plan over the spring.
On capital projects, the superintendent said construction documents for the Stevens Middle School replacement are in the final design phase and that the contractor will begin site mobilization the week of April 14, with foundational work to follow about a month later. The superintendent proposed a public groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, April 12 and asked board members to confirm availability.
Separately, board members discussed long‑running state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issues involving county‑managed trust lands and recent DNR statements that its new commissioner placed a six‑month pause on new harvest listings pending a review. The superintendent said two Clallam County parcels already sold remain subject to litigation.
No budget increases or capital contract awards were approved at the meeting; the Stevens construction timeline was described as design and procurement milestones moving toward on‑site work.
