City sustainability staff provided an operational update on ongoing and planned energy-efficiency and renewable-energy projects across municipal buildings.
Why it matters: these projects are meant to reduce energy use and operating costs for municipal facilities, and some projects are supported by utilities and incentive programs that significantly decrease the city’s out-of-pocket costs.
Key project updates - Solar installations: materials for rooftop solar were delivered for the high school, McAuliffe and Robinson (materials staged; installation timeline to follow). Staff said they will document progress with photos as arrays are installed on roofs. - LED lighting: lighting upgrades are complete in portions of the library and at McCall; additional LED work at the Freshman Academy is expected to finish by the end of the month with the remainder of building common-area lighting phased to conclude in March. - Motors and VFDs: the city is pursuing a package of energy-efficiency upgrades (variable frequency drives and high-efficiency motors) at six sites, including five schools and the municipal building. Staff said the package is roughly a $200,000 project but the city’s net cost after incentives is expected to be approximately $12,000. - Weatherization: projects planned for the wastewater plant, the drinking-water plant, cemetery buildings, DPW headquarters, parks headquarters and the municipal building will proceed when weather is suitable in spring. - Permeable pavement discussion: staff described operational limitations encountered in other municipalities (snowplow damage, salt use clogging porosity and specialty street-sweeper needs). Council members noted these practical constraints mean permeable or porous paving is often limited to walkways, parks or limited-use areas rather than high-traffic streets or parking lots.
Next steps and communications Staff will provide before-and-after photos for the library lighting project and share progress photos as rooftop solar is installed. Staff also noted they will coordinate with National Grid and other partners for incentives and will report back to the council when project milestones are reached.
Ending: Council members thanked staff for the update and requested circulation of photos and a short summary of projected energy savings once the incentive calculations are finalized.
