Michelle Olsen, district Director of Teaching and Learning, told the board Tuesday that districtwide assessment results show measurable cohort gains after the district implemented a new core ELA curriculum, transitional kindergarten programming and professional learning communities.
Olsen reviewed DIBELS early literacy screening for kindergarten through primary grades and MAP growth measures for grades 2–8. She said kindergarten midyear DIBELS results rose from roughly 20% at or above benchmark in the fall to about 60% at midyear districtwide, noting that each elementary school showed progress. Olsen credited earlier investments: a district‑wide curriculum adopted in 2021–22, transition‑to‑kindergarten (TTK) programming and two–to‑three years of PLC/MTSS implementation.
Olsen described how the district is triangulating data — DIBELS for foundational skills and MAP for application — and said cohorts who began in earlier years impacted by COVID‑era learning disruptions are now showing steady growth through third grade and beyond. She noted the district will continue strengthening teacher training and MTSS systems and highlighted middle school “flex time” at Stevens Middle School as an example of data‑driven scheduling: students identified by PLCs for extra ELA or math support are pulled for targeted instruction during dedicated daily flex blocks.
The presentation included maps and cohort charts by grade and school; Olsen told the board the district aims for 100% of students at or above benchmark and will continue monitoring progress through spring assessments. Board members asked about TTK impacts and Olsen said the district will bring a more detailed TTK update in March including parent testimonials.
No policy or budget vote was taken; Olsen said follow‑up will include expanded professional development and continued MTSS work.
