Residents and former students urged the Marblehead School Committee to name the high‑school athletic complex for former athletic director Alex Klobich during the public‑comment portion of the meeting.
Joan Rosenthal, who said she attended the civic class that required participation in town meetings and spoke about the long history of community involvement in the schools, recounted how a coach she and others remember as “Mr. Kulovich” had inspired her. Rosenthal asked the committee to give “that recognition” to “Mr. Klobich.”
The committee chair, Jen Shaffner, read excerpts from the district’s policy FF on naming new facilities and spaces and explained the procedure: a naming request must be submitted in writing to the school committee chair, include the intent and reasons the name fits the facility, and is followed by a period for public comment before the committee deliberates and votes. Shaffner said the committee had received the request, that the policy would guide the process, and that the committee expected to consider the item, likely at the next meeting. She invited additional community input by email or phone and said samples of suggested plaque lettering were available to committee members.
Two other public commenters also spoke in support. A Glover teacher identified as Diane described her professional connection to the district and said she supported the request; another speaker, a longtime teacher, described working with members of Mr. Klobich’s family and urged approval.
The chair said the administration would circulate the naming policy and that the committee would set a consideration period for public comment and then deliberate and vote according to policy FF.
