St. Pete Beach firefighters conduct live-fire training at Pinellas County facility

Adam Poyer, the deputy fire chief of the St. Pete Beach Fire Department, said firefighters from St. Pete Beach and neighboring Gulf Beaches departments conducted live-fire training at the Pinellas County Fire Training Facility, which is operated by St. Petersburg College.
The training included multiple evolutions that simulate on-the-job operations, Poyer said, including simulated fire attacks and search-and-rescue drills. He described one evolution as “VEIS, which is vent, enter, isolate, and search,” a drill that simulates rescuing a conscious or viable victim from a room during a structure fire.
Poyer emphasized health and safety as a core focus. “At the end of this evolution today, the firefighters are gonna exit the dangerous environment and they're gonna be decontaminating themselves to ensure that all those toxic chemicals are off of them to protect them and their family when they go home at night,” he said.
Poyer said the event is part of a regular schedule: the Gulf Beaches run a monthly training session that rotates topics to keep firefighters prepared for situations they may encounter throughout Pinellas County.
