Shelby Academy presenter honors 17‑year‑old GED graduate; district highlights alternative education program

Mister Bennett Roberts of Shelby Academy told the Shelby County Board of Education on Feb. 27 that Zachary Holland earned a GED after joining the Shelby Academy program on Aug. 26, 2024. Roberts said Holland completed the program within four months, passing the math, reading and social studies tests on his first attempt and earning the credential at age 17. Holland was not present at the meeting; Roberts noted family members were watching online.
Roberts described Holland as the second GED graduate in the 2024–25 school year and the tenth overall graduate from the program. He reported that, as of the meeting, 11 students were enrolled in the Shelby Academy GED program: three students were about three‑quarters complete, one was about halfway complete, and two were scheduled to take official exams the coming Tuesday.
Roberts said the program opens routes to further training and employment; he noted Holland is now working full time at a factory. Board members and attendees applauded Holland’s achievement.
