Nueces County commits $250,000 in ARPA funds to Casablanca drainage project with Drainage District No. 2

Commissioner Matos introduced the item, describing the Casablanca neighborhood and parts of Robstown as low-lying developed areas where prior storms caused standing floodwater that entered homes. The drainage district’s chairman, Robert Gonzales, told the court the project has been delayed since 2020, inflation has raised costs, and the drainage district needs the county contribution to complete work. "It is over 2,000,000 for sure," Gonzales said when asked about total cost; contractors estimated the project at about $2.6 million.
Why it matters: Commissioners said the contribution — roughly 10 percent of the project cost — is a supplement to grant funding already secured by the drainage district. Supporters characterized the award as a timely fix for chronic flooding in parts of Robstown and surrounding neighborhoods.
