Senate honors Tahoma High School ‘We the People’ team with resolution

The Washington State Senate on Thursday adopted Senate Resolution 8620 honoring Tahoma High School’s We the People team for its record in state and national competition.
Senator Steve Ramos moved adoption of the floor resolution and praised the team and longtime coach Gretchen Wolfing. The Senate then recognized team members and their adviser in the gallery.
SR 8620, read on the Senate floor, lists the team roster and recounts competitive achievements: the resolution states the team won the state competition on Jan. 18, 2025, described the victory as the team’s "sixteenth consecutive state championship" and referenced the team’s repeated national top-10 finishes. The resolution names coach Gretchen Wolfing and requests that copies be transmitted to the team, the team adviser and Tahoma High School principal Jody Bellavoe.
Senator Ramos said the program promotes civic engagement and thanked the coach by name, saying the coach "has gone out of her way for decades getting kids excited about the constitution." Senator Lynda Fortunato also offered remarks recalling that she had previously sponsored a similar amendment honoring the team when she was a state representative.
After adoption by voice vote the president acknowledged the team and their coach in the North Gallery and asked members to recognize the guests. The resolution was adopted by voice vote; the transcript does not include a roll-call tally.
